Visit Napa: The top 10 places to dine in the surrounding area

"... Eating in Napa is far from a charity case. To highlight what the city has to offer, I’ve compiled 10 of my favorite places. It wasn’t hard to do –  I had 20 contenders, and that doesn’t even include Yountville or St. Helena..."

"Cole’s Chop House
Hungry for a hunk of meat?  Cole’s restaurant, a pioneer of the new wave of downtown restaurants when it opened in 2000 is tailor made for the committed carnivore. Appropriately, the menu kicks off with nine classic cocktails ($9-$12) including a side car and what they call Napa Manhattan with Woodford Reserve.  Move on from there to oysters Rockefeller ($16), grilled white prawn cocktail ($11) or a Caesar that’s not shy on anchovy ($9). Steaks are dry-aged 21 days. One pound of New York steak will cost $59, and can be accompanied by creamed spinach ($9), broccoli with Hollandaise ($7), a baked potato ($5) or other side dishes."

Napa Valley Vintners announces local restaurant Wine List Award winners

WineListAwardBottles.jpgThe Napa Valley Vintners recognized 56 local restaurants that feature at least 50 percent or 50 placements of Napa Valley wine on their lists.

Greg Cole, chef and owner of two Napa restaurants and recipient of two awards, said, “it is an honor to be recognized by the Napa Valley Vintners for our wine programs. For the last 17 years at Celadon and 15 years at Cole’s Chop House, we have been proudly featuring, selling and serving amazing wines made by our friends and neighbors.”

Top Restaurants with Winning Wine Lists North of San Francisco

Let’s face it. The primary reason that day trippers head to wine country is to drink wine. It’s impossible to drink poorly in Napa and Sonoma, but according to our surveyors, die-hard oenophiles should seek out these top five restaurants that boast enviable wine cellars. If price is not an issue, The French Laundry is in a league of its own. Under the direction of head sommelier Dennis Kelly, the wine list features a coveted collection of more than 15,000 bottles (nearly 2,500 selections, including 250 options in the half-bottle format) that showcase some of the finest producers from around the world, with a special focus on the classics from Burgundy, Bordeaux and Napa Valley. Meanwhile, fans of cult Californian cabs will find plenty to swoon over at Terra and Cole’s Chop House, which ranked #2 and #3 for winning wine lists respectively. And for sheer comprehensiveness, oenophiles will find a quaffer’s delight at the Restaurant at Meadowood, Auberge du Soleil and La Toque, where the long-time staffers at the latter have elevated food and wine paring to an art form.

"Greg Cole is a Napa Valley Marquee Chef. His two restaurants in Downtown Napa keep regulars returning for the fresh and lively food, but to his loving and good humored children, he is just dad. There are never too many tomatoes in Greg Cole’s business or his home. He offers two simple recipes plus a seasonal video to make the season of tomato rapture live large in any month...."

Onside Scoop SF - Michael Bauer - Under the radar: Cole's Chop House

"It was the New Zealand rack of lamb that made me a convert. I’ve reviewed lots of restaurants in Napa, but for some reason I never made it to Cole’s Chop House. I didn’t really think there’d be much of interest in a steakhouse.

It took our monthly Wine Country section on Napa, which will be published on Sunday, Aug. 22, that lured me through the door of this 1886 structure that has thick rock walls, an open kitchen downstairs and a mezzanine that overlooks the downstairs action and still has enough ceiling height to feel luxurious...."

Set in an 1886 historic building, Greg Cole's Napa meatery "satisfies that red-meat craving" with "dry-aged", "juicy porterhouses" and ''wonderful sides"; the clientele admits the "array of beef" "will clog the heart and separate you from the Benjamins" but it's "just what you need for that Screaming Eagle" or another full-bodied fave from the "fabulous" 220-label list; locals, though, prefer quaffing "great Martinis" and "chatting" with the "accommodating staff" at the "happening" bar.
